With the primary election approaching, 6th Congressional District Republican candidates Wil Armstrong and Mike Coffman each dipped into their personal bank accounts last month for ad buys.
Armstrong has loaned his campaign $500,000 in July, according to new FEC records. Coffman loaned his campaign $100,000, FEC records show.
Armstrong manager Jack Stansbery said the $500,000 went to "getting our message out."
"Obviously, TV (advertising) is expensive, and voter contact in general," Stansbery said.
Coffman manager Dustin Zvonek said Coffman loaned himself the $100,000 last month after hearing of a $500,000 ad buy by the Armstrong campaign.
Coffman wanted "insurance money" in case the Armstrong campaign began running negative ads against him, Zvonek said.
The money was used for ads to fight Armstrong ads branding him a "career politician," Zvonek said.
Also, the Coffman campaign hasn't been running TV ads this week -- that's because the campaign is building up for a last-minute ad blitz next week, Zvonek said.
A new Coffman ad will begin airing next Sunday or Monday, Zvonek said.
Armstrong ended July with $399,755.77 cash-on-hand; Coffman reported having $147,944.44 cash-on-hand.

To the contrary
Coffman has on at least one occasion identified himself as the only candidate in the race with combat experience.
Doesn't remember a name? The guy's met thousands of people while out there; you're gonna bust his balls for forgetting a name? I've personally coached Coffman on the names of local party faithful and even officials on occasion, so that dog don't hunt.
As for the use of the helicopters, gimme a break; you remembered the ad, and that was the intent. Incidentally, Col Ward was previously an Artillery Officer, so it's not as if his only experience is in a non-combat arms role.
No claim
has ever been made that Coffman was a combat leader, unlike Ward with his stupid radio ads with helicopters in the background. He's a military lawyer. Period. The guy can't even rememeber people that he met on the campaign trail. That may make him a great Marine, but he sucks as a politician.
Coffman? Combat?
Anyone who has heard Coffman's canned story about his time in Desert Storm knows the extent to which he actually saw combat. As for his latest foray into Iraq, his reputation was for sleeping, not leading. I was with Ward in Fallujah and know very well that while he may not have been calling down hate and discontent on the enemy, he was doing work vital to the mission, not simply writing "...wills and stuff..."
Unfortunately, JAGs have to be consulted before just about any combat operation to ensure we don't fcuk something up.
There's more to being a military lawyer than just paperwork, jackass.
Ward
What difference does it make about Ward and Coffman, I am voting for Steve. Steve is a leader of men and a true Marine!!!
Steve Ward, Combat?
It's not like you lead troops into battle, Steve, You're a freaking JAG officer. You write wills and stuff. So give me a break. This is why you suck as a candidate. You have nothing to offer so you make things up. You'll be lucky to get 10% and hopefully someone primaries against you. You're terrible for the GOP.
Your Not a Sergeant, You Misspelled It
You need to stop posting, until you learn how to spell. ps next time you posture, spell it correctly.
let's get real
Steve Ward is more a marine than coffman will ever be, it is impossible to take a photo op
in a combat zone. When elected two years ago, coffman promised to fulfil the position of Secretary of State. Two years later he wants to be a Congressman, simply because the position he is currently holding, is merely administrative, is that being humble?
Trying to Buy it with Negative Ads
It seems to me that the legacy candidate, Wil Armstrong, is attempting to buy this election with negative ads (not to mention the hit piece). CD-6 Voters need to reject this kind of behavior and elect the humble, positive "Marine that could," Mike Coffman.
